Why buy a barbecue or grill cover? You’ve invested in a nice grill, well don’t let that investment get destroyed by the weather! A barbecue cover is one of the most important things you’ll buy for your outdoor kitchen. It often gets overlooked. Unfortunately, most grills or fire pits do not come with a cover (don’t ask me why!). So you have to go out of the way to get a cover. It doesn’t take much, any weatherproof material that completely covers your grill will do. Sure, you can get a fancy, fitted one with a beautiful logo so that it looks nicer when you aren’t cooking, but any old tarp will do in a pinch.
Most grill production companies, such as Weber and Char-Broil, make covers specifically designed to fit each of their models. Less expensively you can find all-purpose grill covers at most places grills are sold.
What happens if you don’t use a grill cover?
- Well, for one thing, the metal of your grill will corrode faster. Exposure to wind and water will accelerate the rusting and wear on your grill, shortening its life. The corrosion and rust is also very hard to clean and leads to a poor working surface, more sticking of food to your grill grate and an overall uglier appearance.
- Also, if water gets inside your grill, it can form a paste with ashes which will dry into a hard cement-like substance! This can be very difficult, if not impossible, to clean and remove.
- If you store charcoal, wood or charcoal fire starters under your grill, they can be exposure to moisture and damaged or destroyed as well.
Convinced yet? Really it’s quite simple, a grill cover is inexpensive and will greatly prolong the life span of your barbecue or fire pit. Don’t go without one!
