All About Your Cast Iron Fire Pit

A cast iron fire pit is a common outdoor fire pit available almost everywhere. There are several producers of these backyard fire pits. Here is a bit of an intro to cast iron firepits.

  • Strength and Durability – Cast iron is a strong and heavy metal which can withstand quite a pounding. Most cast iron pits are thick and strong and will last a long time.
  • Affordability – Cast iron is generally less expensive than some other metals used for outdoor fire pit construction, such as copper. There are many versions on the market which offer various functionality for relatively inexpensive cost. Definitely a great quality to price ratio!
  • Portability – Most cast iron firepits are self-contained, solid units which are a low-lying bowl shape. This means that most of these fire pits, except the very largest ones, are relatively portable. I can throw mine in the back of my car with ease to bring it with me to the beach or campground! Some models of cast iron fire pit also have wheels and handles for easy maneuverability.
  • Functionality – Many cast iron firepit manufactures include a grill grate, mesh screen cover and fire poker with their outdoor fire pits. This means that without any extra accessories you can start your fire and even cook on your grill over a real wood fire with ease.
  • The Downside to Cast Iron – So what’s wrong with cast iron for a fire pit? This depends on your perspective! For me, my cast iron fire pit is perfect for many situations. However, there are a couple things about these firepits to consider. For one, cast iron is relatively heavy. I have not found this to be a problem but if you have a very large cast iron fire pit, it may be hard to carry. Also, cast iron has a lower melting point than some other metals like copper. This means that cast iron over time can become corroded and worn thin with use. This will still take years of aggressive use but it will happen faster than with a copper fire pit. Finally, iron tends to corrode and rust with exposure to air and water. Therefore, it is very important to buy a tarp cover for your fire pit to protect it from the weather between uses.
